RESTORING THE LIAONING WETLANDS – ENDANGERED NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS​

​China is one of the 17 megadiversity countries in the world. It is home to one-eighth of all terrestrial wild plant and animal species and has 66 million hectares of wetlands, representing 10% of the world's wetlands and 8% of China's total land area. It is ranked first in Asia and fourth in the world in terms of wetland area. These provide 55% of the country's ecosystem services, contain 82% of freshwater resources and are home to more than 11,000 species of plants and animals, including 54% of Asia's extinct birds. They are also a very important flyway for a large number of birds. Due to demographic pressure, urban expansion and adverse land-use policy choices, China's wetlands have suffered a very serious rate of degradation and disappearance in recent decades.​ This project contributes to restoring the ecosystem in two wetlands of major importance located in the Northeast of the country, in Liaoning Province. The objective is to promote biodiversity conservation and generate a positive impact on local development.​

The French Development Agency reached out to JITU to help them document and promote a wetland restoration project they are developing in Liaoning Province. Over the course of 2013 and 2014, G2S traveled to Panjin multiple times to film the region during different seasons.
